Due to the illegal drug activity on Cat Island and the violence directed towards foreigners, we at Cutlass Bay Club no longer feel that our guests will be safe at the resort. Cutlass Bay Club is closed. Cutlass Bay was the target of arsonists last year. On November 14, 2000 rank Shannon an American who owns property on Cat Island car was destroyed by arsonists. Numerous U.S. registered aircraft have been vandalized. In addition, there have been many more incidences of violence on the island, most of which received little, if any, police attention. The Bahamas have been put on the Black List by the OECD because of drug dealing and money laundering. Sanctions are also being threatened by the U.S. In the past few years, Cat Island has been especially perilous. We no longer feel we can subject our guests to the danger. We wanted to thank you for your past business and the friendships we have developed at Cutlass. We are currently looking for another country to open up a new "Cutlass Bay Club," and if we are successful we will notify you. Our 10 years at Cat Island will always be cherished because of the wonderful people we have met over the years. So many people came as guests but left as friends. We have fond memories of so many of our guests. My daughter, Stacy, and I are writing a book about our experiences on Cat Island. The title is Sand Money and the book is about the drug dealing and the corruption experienced in our 10 years on the island. It is about the attack that occurred against me and my husband Robby. It is also about the nice things about Cutlass Bay. It deals with not only the drug dealers, but the local people that I considered my friends and their reaction to the drug dealing and corruption on the island. It is about our guests, whose names have been changed to protect their privacy. But. other than the names of Cutlass Bay's guests this is a true story. We hoped it would be settled in court, but the culprits are still on Cat Island and the files have disappeared in the court system. We give up. All the foreign-owned resorts on Cat Island have been subjected at one time or another to terror and horror. We thought it wouldn't happen to us. It did. Pigeon Cay was a victim of arson and was totally destroyed. (No one was arrested or convicted.) A manager of Hawks Nest Club was set fire by locals and burned to death. (The parties responsible were hanged.) The owner of Fernandez Bay Village was arrested for drug dealing. When released, he was almost killed by a hit and run driver. (No one arrested or convicted.) The plane owned by Greenwood Inn was almost destroyed by vandals. (No one was convicted.) A previous manager of Greenwood was killed mysteriously. (Many rumors exist on Cat Island.) Cutlass Bay Club was the subject of arson and assault. ( No one convicted.) The previous American owners of Hawks Nest and the previous American owner/manager of Cutlass Bay were convicted in U. S. Courts for Drug trafficking charges. Cat Islanders have been convicted, appealed the conviction and one Cat Islander lost his appeal and appealed again. Bahamian law allows the convicted to go free until the appeal is heard. The U. S. has requested that steps be taken requiring those convicted to remain in jail while waiting appeal but to no avail. The only Cat Islanders involved in drugs who are convicted and sent to jail are the small time dealers who do not have the money for lawyers and bribery. The engine of an American's plane on the runway at Hawk Nest was shot 3 or 4 times through the cowling. It went down three days later. (No one arrested or convicted.) A lady from Germany and her husband from the U. S. had a car burned by arsonists. ( No one arrested or convicted.) Last month another American's car was burned sitting in his driveway. No one has been arrested and we have been advised by one of the local policemen that the Administrator on the island told the police to cease the investigation. As you can see, it time to leave Cat island. Continue to visit our web site for more details about Sand Money. I think you will find it interesting. If you have read Herman Wouk's Don't Stop the Carnival you will like Sand Money. I always said Robby would not be like Norman Paperman and leave the island. But that is exactly what has happened. To our previous guests, please keep in touch with us. E-mail us and let us know about your lives. If you have special memories you think would work in the book or you want to let us know about, please call or e-mail Stacy@cutlass-bay.com. Your privacy will be protected. Sincerely, |
